In our house we are always looking for good books to read to the boys, or have them read. Our 5 year old is learning to read, and it is at a grade 1 reading level at the start of SK, so we are proud of hm. We are also always trying to keep that thirst for reading alive, and finding things to challenge him. Or hold his attention while we read to him.
When I was asked to check out a new book from Happy Tales Publishing called Happy Christmas Gift, I thought this would be perfect for him. I was told the book is aimed at 5 – 7 year olds.
We received a nice package of things from Happy Tales Publishing. Check this out:
|We received a hard cover book, a poster, a soft cover book, and a Happy Stuffy|
I didn’t have high hopes for the 3 year old wanting to sit through the book, as it is rather long for him. But both him and the 5 year old sat nicely while I read. They even waited patiently while I dealt with the baby who kept trying to wreak havoc on everyone.
Overall, the story was great, and the boys loved it. The one thing I didn’t necessarily like was that Happy gets a gift of magical dust that helps make anyone who pets him be nice to others. I am not sure that I like the message in that particular statement, that it takes magic dust to get people to be nice. But I think I may be reading into it too much. They did reiterated the message of doing good things for others, and treating them how you would like to be treated. If I had written the story, I just would’ve done that part different is all.
I will for sure be reading this to my boys on a regular basis. The 3 yr old was very excited about the poster, and the 5 yr old loved the Happy Dog.
I asked my 5 yr old for a quote and he said: This book is very special.
