Christmas Gift Guide: ThinkGeek.com review

I have to admit it, I am married to a Geek.  I am not ashamed of it, I am quite proud of it, as he is a very smart man and is really good to me and our boys.  I had my suspicions for years that he was a geek, but when I checked out thinkgeek.com last year for Christmas I was 100% sure.  Everything on that site I either want to buy it for him, his sister, or my high school BFF.

The problem I have with this site is that I can not just go on quickly and look at 1 thing...Nope I end up going and spending like an hour at a time!  I feel sucked into a black hole! LOL It's not a bad thing unless I have a ton to do.

I was thrilled when they agreed to do a review with me, and I was seriously considering getting something that I could give hubby for Christmas, but then it was too daunting of a task to pick just one thing.  So I let hubby pick (and he picked a long list), and we reviewed one thing.  But he has added others to his Christmas list!  LOL

He chose the Butterfly in a jar.

video

He thought it was pretty cool, and decided to bring it into work.  Several of the guys thought it was real.  One of them even picked it up, tapped on it a few times and asked hubby how long it would live!  LOL

It's a real conversation started, which he likes having things like that on his desk at work.  He is among other things a low-level programmer (as part of his job description, not low on the ladder LOL), and so sometimes when they are stuck on something the guys will go for a walk.  Or go to another one's desk to ask a question or two.

He has had different conversation starters over the years, this is his latest.  When he is done with it at work, he will bring it home for the boys and kitties to play with.

There are so many things on think geek that we would like.  Here are a few:

This is a circuit board business card holder.  I think it would be cool for hubs because he designs circuit boards as part of his job too.
Donut Maker - Ok this is for me, but the guys would all love me to have this!
ROBOMOWER!!! - nuff said.

Rubik's Mirror Block - Another conversation starter for work
There are so many more, seriously, I have wasted  browsed enough today, so i won't show you more.

However, when you are there, be sure to read the product descriptions!  They are hilarious! I also love that when you buy something you earn geek points towards future purchases.

When you are at their site have a look around, it is very clever and witty.  I love reading the fortunes, it's stuff customers have wrote to them.  Here is one I got today:

Painting a Chair, huh?
That's all it said LOL!

BUY IT: Go to thinkgeek.com and purchase some gifts!  They are unique and you will find something for everyone!

WIN IT: Fill out the rafflecopter form below for a chance to win a $25 Gift Certificate to Think Geek!

Book Review: Pershing

I have to admit I know very little about US history.  I would like to say that I do recognize many of the bigger names, and can tell you if they were a president or not, I don't know much about Generals, Governors, when certain States became part of the union or whatever.  In all honesty, I am not so good at Canadian history either, and I am Canadian.

I do like reading about history as long as it is in a story form and I am not going to be tested later!

I was given the opportunity to review the book Pershing: Commander of the Great War.  It's part of The Generals Series.

The back cover states: The Greatest American Soldier - Attentive to the last detail, rigid in his expectations of drill and execution, and fiercely protective of every man he commanded, General John J. Pershing helped shape the 20th century by leading American troops in a war that saved Europe.   Alienating some and inspiring others, Pershing recognized challenges of modern warfare and embraced them as his life's mission.  More than 60 years after his death, he personifies the image of an American General.

Army service in the Philippines and Mexico and alongside Teddy Roosevelt in Cuba served as a critical training ground for Pershing.  When President Roosevelt promoted him to general in 1906, Pershing had been one of the army's oldest captains.  now, as one of its youngest generals, that training would be put to the test in the coming Great War.

Author John Perry unveils a general somewhat neglected by history, a mystifying fact considering that at one time more than a million soldiers followed him into battle.  When France and England yearned for much-needed support against a German juggernaut, Pershing established an aggressive strategy that incorporated overwhelming numbers and comprehensive engagement, a strategy that made all the difference.  Not only were there honor and order in his methods, there was victory.  A legend in his own time, Pershing became the first man to be appointed General of the Armies.

What drew me to the book originally was that this great man is almost completely forgotten in history, or at least he isn't talked about enough that I had never heard his name before.

His story is very intriguing and you really do feel drawn to this man.  You get a glimpse into his personal life that he kept hidden from most people.

I found this book to be quite intriguing and a real page turner.  If you are a history buff, or someone who just likes a good story, I would recommend picking up this book!

Living Green Tip of the Day

I am totally not the crunchy Mommy type, but I do try to recycle and live green when possible.  So here is a quick and easy tip I learned at one of my previous jobs and I still do now.  It is also a great frugal tip.

Do you like making notes, or need a note pad by the phone?  Well I take packing slips, or pieces of paper we no longer need, and turn them into note pads.

1. Get a pile of no longer needed 8x10 (can be any size but this is the size I most commonly have.

2. Cut them into 4s.

3. Staple them into stacks.

Voila!  You have a notepad, and you didn't have to waste any paper, or spend money one.  You also don't have to throw out or place in the recycling bin that no longer needed paper!  When you are finished with the notes, you can recycle it then!

Christmas Gift Guide: Loose Button Lux Box Review

Ever since I had my 3rd son it seems it has brought out a girly girl that has been locked inside for years.  I am not sure if it is the estrogen battling the overwhelming testosterone in the house, or just the fact that I can have something all mine.  Whatever the reason I have really ramped up my love for all things girly.  So while I never pampered myself much before, I am starting to really get into it now.

I am also a lover of shopping online, and having items come right to my door.  That makes me really happy.

I found this really cool subscription service called LooseButton Luxe Box.  Luxe Box is a monthly subscription service that delivers 4-5 deluxe-sized beauty samples to your doorstep in a chic box. The samples range from skincare and makeup to fragrance, body, and haircare. What’s more? These samples have been hand-picked by beauty experts!  They are currently only available in Canada, but are working hard to expand to other countries.

I received the November Lux Box:

Lux Box

When I opened the box I saw this sticker!

My November Box

This is packed with such great goodies!  I had fun trying all the items.  They  are good quality products too, and I love the personalized touch.  I assumed that they had all the boxes long done up and they just sent them out.  But they took the time to put a "Shari" sticker on it.  That is a really cool and surprising touch.

I have seen Teopia, but never tried any of their products until the Lux Box and I really enjoyed my tea!

I don't personally wear perfume as they give me migraines and rashes, but my sister is going to be very excited when I give her my sample of Neiges by Lise Watier.  It is a nice light scent and was able to smell it without a migraine.

I think it would be so fun to get a sampling of different products to try each month.  I also think this makes an awesome gift!!

BUY IT: Check out Loose Button and subscribe for a plan starting as little as $36 for 3 months.

WIN IT: You can win one of their boxes by entering the giveaway via the rafflecopter form below:

30 Day Blogging Challenge: Day 28: Something that you miss

Today's Challenge is to let you all know something that I miss.

While I don't ever want to have another baby, go through pregnancy and delivery again.  I do miss the feeling of being pregnant.  Well parts of it:

Rubbing my belly.  Feeling my Baby move.  The excitement of the ultrasound.  Finding out what we are having.  Getting to announce to everyone about the new bundle.

After birth, laying there with a brand new baby sleeping on my chest. Meeting him for the first time.  Telling him he will never throw a tantrum or talk back to Mom.  Just being there him and me with no one else.  Laying in a bed while everyone takes care of  me.  Breakfast in bed with no dishes to clean up?  I am telling you that's vacation!

My favourite age is always 0-1 so I will miss never having anyone that age again.  Well until I have grandkids, which will be a while yet.

What do you miss?

Christmas Gift Giving Guide: Dymo CardScan Review

Have you ever seen something in the store and thought OOOOOOO I really want that, but then you wonder if it is really going to be as useful as you think it will be?  I know I have, and some I have bought them and nope they were not, and some were way more than I thought they would be.

There are a few items I just leave at the store and think "One day you shall be mine!"  Well the Dymo CardScan falls into this category.  I really wanted it, but can't even talk myself into paying $5 for a ball of yarn just because I want it.  So when I was asked to review the Dymo CardScan I hopped out of my seat jumped up and down, and then calmly wrote "Sure that sounds great!"

Dymo CardScan Personal - Model: CardScan 62

As a review blogger, and as a mom, I find we are always given business cards for one thing or another, and I always just stash them in what I think is going to be a good spot...but can never find them when I need them.  So I end up trying to remember the name and company to do a search online.  Are you with me on this?  Oh another problem I have is, a lot of my contacts just email me, and then I am trying to think about the person who contacted me about a product or service I end up  searching my emails for the contact, and wasting tons of time.  It makes me insane.

The Dymo CardScan Personal makes managing contact information fast, accurate and portable.  It comes with a little carrying case, and only needs to be plugged into your computer via a USB Cable!

What came in the box
I like to think of myself as tech savvy, but sometimes I am not at all.  LOL I try to set up these things on my own and inevitably I end up calling hubby for help.  But with this, there was no calling hubby.  Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy I got the software installed, and set up.
Next I wanted to scan a business card, and I just put it where the bright blue arrow was, and voila!! it pulled it through.  It pulls all the data in and puts it into the contact database as best it can.  On my hubby's card, which is white background in standard format, and has tons of information on it, it pulled all the info and I only had to add in his personal info that isn't on the card.

For some of the ones that are more fancy, it wasn't always sure where to put some info, but it did a great job still!  I found with a quick edit here and there it was really quite quick and simple.  You can even do batch sets, so if you went to a conference you could scan all the cards in one set.  It only takes a couple of seconds per card for it to scan and put on the computer in the database.  You can even put the same card in again with the back side down and tell it to do the back, if they have info on the back of the card you want captured.

There is a place to put notes in for each contact, and you can pick your category as to how you want to classify them.  If you want to make a new category you can do that too.

It is extremely portable, and is made for you take on the road with you.  So for all you conference goers, you could bring this with you, and scan business cards in the hotel in the evenings, or if you have a lunch break pull it out and scan while eating (hee hee or even during a boring speaker ROFL)!  I have to say, people will be completely jealous!

So maybe you are a completely organized person and are thinking you already have a lot of your contacts set up in  Microsoft Outlook®, Outlook® Express, Palm® Desktop or Windows® Mobile, you can set up your cardscan to add them there instead!

Ok here is the part that totally blew my mind! Seriously, I read that it did this and went WHAT??? NO WAY!!! And it totally did it!!! Ok ok telling you what it does now....

Dymo’s CardScan also makes managing your email contacts easy.  You know how just about every person who  sends an email from their place of business has a signature, and in that signature is all the contact information you will ever need for them?  Well, all you have to do is highlight the contact information in an email signature, web page or other text file and drag it over to the CardScan software. It then puts that information into your contacts in the CardScan software!  I loved "my new toy" as it was before I found this out... Seriously now I am crazy about it.  This is going to make my blogging business and craft business organized in the area I have been having the most trouble with!

The CardScan Personal device retails for $189.99 at office supplies stores (Staples, Grand & Toy, Basics).  I bet with the holiday season you might even find a better deal than that, although I think it is worth the money.

I highly recommend this!  It is an amazing tool, and will organize your life even if you don't have a business.  If you do, I would say this is a must have, and you can claim it as a business expense.  Oh and put it on your Christmas list, and maybe Santa will get it for you!
